Al was never one to voice the obvious.

When Russell started visiting more often he didn’t say a thing.

When he moved to Central suddenly, Al kept his opinions to himself.

When Al noticed Russell spending more time at their house than his own, he minded his own business.

Even when he all but shared a room with his brother Al kept his mouth shut.

Currently, they were greeting Russell at the train station after his visit to his home town. Why they were doing this was another thing Al didn’t speak on. He didn’t need help with his lone bag and Al was sure if Russell knew the way to any house in Central it was theirs, but Al merely sighed, he figured all would be sorted out soon enough.

Al watched Ed walking in front of him and the instant he spotted Russell on the platform he began pushing his way through the crowd. He continued to keep his distance as he observed the pair. Their excited chatter stopped and they were staring at each other in a way that had Al thinking, it’s about damn time.

In the span of time if took Alphonse to blink they were kissing like long lost lovers.

Al still said nothing he merely smiled at their exchange as well as the faces of several stunned passengers. After they parted, two faces flushed and when they turned to face Al he smiled but remained quiet.

They had it under control, his commentary was not needed.

A month of extended leave goes by and Al could see no change in Ed at all. If anything he was worse. He only did what was absolutely necessary and at times he didn’t even do that.

Al couldn’t count the times he woke screaming.

He couldn’t count the times he’d walked into his brother’s room and found him there just as he’d left him the night before Clutching Roy’s coat huddled in a corner or staring out the window.

He seldom slept or ate and it was only Al’s watchful eye that kept him as balanced as he was.

If you could call it that.

Three days before he was to report back to active duty the most disturbing thing happened. He heard Ed talking in the next room. When he entered he saw no one but Ed and that increased his worry in a way Al didn’t think possible.

When he confronted Ed about it he didn’t answer he just gave Al that blank stare he was becoming much too accustomed to seeing on his brother’s face.

Days later when he finally did answer it didn’t ease Al’s mind at all, in fact once he heard the answer he realized he preferred the silence.

Ed said he missed talking to Roy the most… so when he was alone that’s exactly what he did.

Ed held steady to his brothers ankles as he kept his eyes trained on the kitchen door. His ears were listening for any noise, no matter how faint.

“Do you have them, Al?” he whispered.

“Almost brother. Can you boost me a little higher?”

Ed didn’t reply, he took a deep breath and pushed up on his toes.

“Got it!” Al whispered excitedly, “hold as still as you can.”

Ed held his breath and didn’t release it until he heard the gentle clink of tin meeting tin. Slowly and as quietly as possible, Al climbed off his shoulders. One prize clutched between his teeth, the other grasped in his hand.

He passed one to Ed who accepted it with an accomplished grin. Cautiously, four bare feet crept quietly toward the side door. Al turns the handle and just as they thought they were home free, the hinge creeks loudly. Panicking they look at each other with wide eyes. Just as they decide to make a run for it they hear, “And where do you two think you’re going with those?”

Slowly they turned in unison to face the music. A disgruntled chorus in the form of Trisha Elric.

“If you put those two cookies on the counter, I’ll consider giving them to you after dinner.”

With slumped shoulders and matching pouts, they did just that before slinking out of the room.

Next time they’d oil that damn hinge.
