As the two brothers sat at the kitchen table, each with a coffee mug in hand, neither one knew how to break the tense silence. Al had tried to look his brother in the eye half a dozen times and it just wasn’t working. His face flushed and his heart hammered in his chest every time.
He wasn’t sure if he could ever look at his beloved Brother the same again.
Ed sighed for what had to have been the fifth time and Al tried, unsuccessfully, to look at him again. Swallowing hard Al said, “With… with the rainy season starting my… the research group called it quits a few days early.”
Ed’s head whipped around and even without looking at him Al could feel those blazing amber eyes narrow at him, “Yeah, I managed to figure that out somehow.”
Ed’s tone made Al swallow hard again and he wanted nothing more than to be swallowed whole by the chair he was sitting in.
Ed let out another exasperated sound before taking a big drink of his coffee, slamming the mug down on the table and saying, “Look Al as much as I’d… as much as we’d both like to erase the last forty-five minutes we can’t so…”
Al chanced a peek at his brother and when some vivid imagery came along with it he turned away and said, “So…”
“So we have to deal with it and move on. I… I mean… shit we can’t just sit here in awkward silence forever.”
“No… no we can’t I just…” words failed Al for the hundredth time since he’d gotten home and walked in on… oh gods he couldn’t even think about it.
“I’ll apologize once more and other than swearing never to do it again I don’t know what I can say or do, Al.”
“I guess it’s such a shock because… well because I knew there was some tension between you three. I suppose I just assumed you’d pick one of them and that would be that. I never imagined…”
Ed let his head drop into his hands as he tried to shake the image of Al’s face when he’d walked into the living room. Ed’s only consolation is that Russell hadn’t been in the mood to try the bondage thing… Al may have very well passed out if that had been the case.
Al took a tentative sip of his coffee, swallowed hard once more and asked, “So is this just a… a thing between you three or what?”
Ed sank down in seat and groaned. He couldn’t believe his little brother was basically asking him if he was having causal sex with Roy and Russell.
“No Al, this is not just... just a thing. The three of us are an item.”
“Oh, so is that what’s up with the necklaces?”
“Huh?”
“Those amulets,” Al said as he pointed at the one around Ed’s neck.
“You managed to notice we all had one on?” Ed asked stunned.
“Well kind of hard not to,” Al said as his face flushed again, “It was the only thing any of you had on.”
Ed decided then and there that this incident and conversation may be the death of them yet. If they survived this nothing could kill them.
“Al…” Ed groaned out only to have Al cut him off.
“Hey I’m the one that walked in on his brother having sex with two other men. I think if anyone should be groaning it should be me.”
Silence fell between them again because neither one of them knew what to say next. Ed was working on some way to close the conversation when Al cleared his throat.
“So… so what’s it like?”
“What!” Ed’s head whipped around so fast he nearly snapped his own neck. “I can’t believe you’re asking me that!”
“Well between the noises and what I saw I’d say it was damn good… I just thought I’d ask.”
“Please tell me we can be done with this conversation, Al. I’ll do dishes for a week… I’ll even clean all of the windows inside and out if this can just be done.”
“I’m sorry Brother. Now that some of the shock has worn off I guess I’m just curious and a bit fascinated to be honest. How do you find room for all the limbs?”
Dead… that’ what Edward Elric wanted to be and if the reaper came for him this instant he wouldn’t fight it. With his arms folded across his chest and staring at the counter to his left hard enough to bore a hole through it Ed said, “We… manage Al, we manage.”
“So I saw,” Al replied as his face took on an even more curious expression. “How do you decide who’s doing what? Or is Russell always sandwiched between you and Roy like that?”
“Al, please… today has been trying enough I don’t…”
“It didn’t look like a bad place to be if I read his expression correctly. Did he even realize I walked in on you three?”
Ed was trying his best not to run away screaming. Of all outcomes to the situation a curious Al was probably the best Al, but damn if it wasn’t killing him on some level. “I’m sure he knows now Al but no, he hadn’t realized it.”
“Wow…” Al said as he face contorted in thought. “You and Roy must be pretty good in order to cause that. You’ll have to tell me what you do one of these…”
Ed was officially over his line. Hopping to his feet he said, “That’s it Al! This conversation is so over. I… I’m glad you’re okay with this and not scarred for life but I may be if you keep asking questions like that.”
“I’m sorry Brother I figure after what I saw today you didn’t have a shy bone in your body. I never would have thought you three were that flexible… I mean in order to do…”
“DONE! We are so fucking done here,” Ed said as he stomped out of the room.
Al sat there with his nearly empty coffee mug in hand mentally compiling a list of all sorts of questions to ask his Brother tomorrow.
Ed couldn’t hide forever.
