Ed’s snickering.

He’s been sitting at the counter all morning watching me and Russell and snickering. When Russell fills up his coffee cup and leaves the room and Ed snickers once more, I finally reach my limit.

“What is so funny?”

Ed gives me a devious look that makes me wary and replies, “You haven’t noticed have you?”

“Noticed what?”

The snickering returns in full force and I glare at him.

“I’m amused with something that obviously has to do with you and Russell. I love you and refuse to think you are this blind and dense so I’ll give you another chance to figure it out.”

I wrack my brain but come up with nothing and the few guesses I give voice has Ed rolling his eyes and looking exasperated.

“Alright Sparky, I’ll give you one big glaring hint but that’s it. If you don’t get it from this I give up on you.”

Before I could reply Ed shouts for Russell and when he enters the room Ed asks us to face each other. Russell looks as confused as I am but he’s just as use to Ed’s antics and sense of humor so he plays along without question.

So here we are, facing each other and confused as fuck. I was about to call Ed crazy when it happens. I realize what it is and I don’t know how to feel about it.

Ed must have seen the dawn of realization on my face because he dismisses Russell who’s only response is to kiss Ed on the cheek and say, “Be sure to tell me what this is all about once you’re done being amused, Love.”

Russell’s hit a late growth spurt and is now noticeably taller than I am.

I’ll never hear the end of it.

Everything that could’ve gone wrong with their mission had and fate was far from done with them.

All of their serious fighters were out of commission. Riza’s gun arm was so broken anyone would call it crushed, Havoc had been blinded by some caustic substance and Maria was missing in action. Their only consolation was the fact that after Roy was shot Ed had gone ballistic and put a serious dent in their enemies’ manpower before he was knocked unconscious.

Heymans and Denny were doing what they could to make it appear as if they had more firepower up and able from their stronghold but they knew it was only a matter of time before their adversaries figured them out.

“Fuery tell me some good news,” Breda shouted at the dark-haired man that was looking after the injured and trying to call for back up.

“I got a signal for a few seconds.”

“So is help on the way?” Brosh asked as he loaded the last of his ammunition into his gun. He wasn’t a cynic but if that soon wasn’t in the next half-hour those of them that weren’t dying due to their injuries would face certain death at the hands of the enemy.

As Denny shot yet another… whatever the hell these things were, he swallowed hard as he watched the thing unfurl some mechanical extension from its chest before it retreated.

How do you kill something that isn’t necessarily alive?

He didn’t know, but he would settle from keeping them away and that would just have to be good enough.

As his brain told him he had three bullets left the familiar flair of alchemical light rose behind the enemy and he sighed in relief when Armstrong came into view.

They’d live to fight another day.

When we arrived at the costume party Ed’s on my left dressed in red and black, wearing a set of horns and carrying a pitchfork. Russell was on my right wearing white and gold with a small set of wings on his back and a halo over his head. Everyone got a kick out of the obvious parallel of their costumes but were confused when it came to my tuxedo.

“What exactly are you supposed to be, Chief?” Breda asked finally giving up on guessing.

“One damn fine, lucky bastard… what else could I be?”

Breda laughed for an hour.
