Ed held steady to his brothers ankles as he kept his eyes trained on the kitchen door. His ears were listening for any noise, no matter how faint.
“Do you have them, Al?” he whispered.
“Almost brother. Can you boost me a little higher?”
Ed didn’t reply, he took a deep breath and pushed up on his toes.
“Got it!” Al whispered excitedly, “hold as still as you can.”
Ed held his breath and didn’t release it until he heard the gentle clink of tin meeting tin. Slowly and as quietly as possible, Al climbed off his shoulders. One prize clutched between his teeth, the other grasped in his hand.
He passed one to Ed who accepted it with an accomplished grin. Cautiously, four bare feet crept quietly toward the side door. Al turns the handle and just as they thought they were home free, the hinge creeks loudly. Panicking they look at each other with wide eyes. Just as they decide to make a run for it they hear, “And where do you two think you’re going with those?”
Slowly they turned in unison to face the music. A disgruntled chorus in the form of Trisha Elric.
“If you put those two cookies on the counter, I’ll consider giving them to you after dinner.”
With slumped shoulders and matching pouts, they did just that before slinking out of the room.
Next time they’d oil that damn hinge.
