Ok so last night around 3 am the PC decided it wanted to do updates so I let it do it's thing and went to bed.... 11:45 this morning it was still trying to finish O.o. After waiting for and hour and it was still on the same screen trying to finish something for google chrome (I think) I restarted my laptop.

When it started back up it went downhill from there. First it would not recognize my wireless internet connection.

Then it wouldn't open certain programs like MS word *cries more*

now it won't start unless its in safe mode....

I have tried several system restore points and no dice...anyone have any clue?  HELP!

Eeek. Not good. Sounds like malware. If you can get to this website (and run XP service pack 2 or higher, Vista, or Win 7) go to
housecall.trendmicro.com and run a free system scan--I do tech support for networks for a living and Housecall rocks. You also might have file corruptions---you may have no choice but to reinstall windows from the disk---if you don't feel comfortable about reinstalling, you need to get it done by a pro. When in doubt, don't risk it.

It does doesn't it? Which sucks ass if it is those things are vicious. I haven't been able to get on the net on my laptop (borrowing the daughters right now) so I don't think I can get to housecall but if I can get to the point of having a connection it will be my first stop. feel fre to throw any and all suggestions my way. *hugs on you*

Can you install a copy of AVG Antivirus on an external drive or flash thumb drive--or how old is your pc? If it is Win7 you can run AVAST on it which is seriously aggressive. Housecall has to interface with your pc and it isn't installed--all that installs is the itnerface program. If you get anitivirus software and it finds nothing, it could be spyware, and a good freeware progran for that is Malware Bytes (go to Cnet's Downloads.Com site for these programs). I like AVAST but it doesn't like XP or Vista at all. Try running/installing in Safe Mode. If you're corrupted/infected, restore doesn't really fix the problem. A visit to the pros is worth saving a pc--and go to a local shop--the Big Box Boys will rip you off and overcharge you.

Also, try getting to websites thru the RUN command:
Start--go to RUN, type the URL of the website (ex: howusecall.trendmicro.com)--housecall has no www. or http:// in front of it--and see if you can go from there---that bypasses the launching of the web browser,

No luck trying to get to it that way but thanks for the tips. I am loading Housecall to a thumb drive and going to try to get it to run on the infected PC that way.
