If you don't care where you are, then you ain't lost.

If you eat a live frog in the morning, nothing worse will happen to either of you for the rest of the day.

I didn't know it was impossible when I did it.

The human mind treats a new idea the way the body treats a strange protein--it rejects it.

Now to the question... are any of you on my F-List  involved in a non-traditional relationship? If so please comment below or PM with whatever you feel comfortable sharing.

I love these quotes! No relationship stuff, sadly. There is just not enough time in the world.

The man flesh and I were in a poly relationship, but it went south due to massive amounts of crazy on the part of the girlfriend. I am contemplating opening it back up again, only this time, *I* get the girlfriend.

The thing with Poly is the total need for honesty and discussion. A lot of people just see sex with other partners and think WOO HOO! PLAYTIME! It's not that way at all. It's a lot of freaking work.

Thank you. I thought if you just want a sex type thing on the side that's what an open relationship was for and I view Polyamory as a different animal all together, something deeper... but perhaps that's where my tendency to be a definition whore comes in lol.

For a lot of people an open relationship = sex with whomever while married to X. I would assume most have ground rules of some sort, X number of partners, only certain days or times, only with permission from partner, etc...

For me, Poly is a deeper level than your basic open relationship. Whereas most open relationships are based first on sex, Poly relationships lean towards being based on the relationship and emotions first of the triad/quad/omg however many there are. The sex is a happy bonus, but it's not the be all and end all of the relationship.

This of course comes with a disclaimer that YMMV and my opinion is just that, an opinion based on my experiences.

As you can tell from my above comment we seem to be on the same page. Recently it was said to me that open and poly were the same thing a (to may toe / to mah toe) kinda of thing and I disagreed hence the great debate starting.

Thanks for chiming in, I am now wondering how many other people think the two are on in the same...this seems like it could lead to a lot of wrong impressions...

A lot of people mistake one for the other. It's all an easy open relationship as far as they are concerned. "You mean I can have sex with other people?!?!?! Where do I sign up?!?!?!" They neglect to read the fine print and notice that Poly is WORK.

I completely concur. It's not something to be entered into or taken lightly. While it ha its rewards it can get hairy if you do not watch/communicate/etc

I'm poly. Been married for almost 19 years now, been with the other spouse for about 15 years -- I count from the age of the girlchild; we were married for 2 years 3 days after she was born, and I added the PseudoSpouse when she was roughly 2. About 6 years ago, Hubby and I both lost our jobs and all income, lost our house, and moved in with PS. It's worked really well for the most part, but there are currently too many people in the house (The Gothling's best friend moved in about 4 years ago to avoid a drunken, abusive Dad, and her BF moved in in June), and my bedroom doesn't have a door, so privacy and therefore sex is virtually nil, but I'm hoping to change that. Trying to get the young couple self-supporting and out on their own. We love her and the boy is OK, but they cost money and privacy.

Anyway, whaddya wanna know? Also, I'm one of the mods on [livejournal.com profile] poly_discuss if you would like to stop by. It's not as active as the big polyamory community, but it also isn't moderated as tightly and the only requirement to be allowed in is "don't be a bot."
