Howdy all this is a totally random news article that had me going ftw? Opinions wanted as always ^_^

Zig-zag lines are being painted intentionally in Virginia in an effort to get drivers to slow down. The 500 feet of Belmont Ridge Road, where it intersects with the Washington and Old Dominion trail in Loudoun County, is a high pedestrian traffic and bicycle traffic area.

  Ok is it just me guys or does this look more like a way to make a driver go WTF and swerve?

Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Mike Salmon said:

“It is a low cost strategy to get motorists to slow down as they approach the bike trail and pedestrian path. While at first motorists may be a little disoriented, the main point is to get them to pay attention and slow down through that area.”

Apparently similar programs have been successful in the U.K. and Australia. VDOT will study the effect of the zig-zagging lines for a year to see if they actually reduce speeds.

I'm thinking that'll make people swerve & cause accidents with cars running into oncomming traffic in an effort to stay in one's lane. ^^;

You knwo, they could always install a traffic light there too, so people & bicycles can cross the street safely. Bicycles shoudl stop at lights just like cars do., not that they always do, but they should. >.>

Ya know!

I have never seen these zigzag lines in person and I think if I was coming down a hill at 50MPH and suddenly the lines went wonky , it would be more than a little distracting.

;p

I've never seen them either, but they seem like more of a safety hazard than a help. I still think that money would have been better spent on a traffic light. Or if they really felt like wasting taxpayer money, build a special overpass for bike & hikers, like they have in Vegas for pedestrians so they can safely makes it across the street on the strip. They've got plenty of room for a gentle incline on both sides.

God, I hope MODOT doesn't get any bright ideas such as that.

LOL glad to hear I'm not the only one that thought the idea was a little crazy. I mean if the point is to keep drivers focused and aware of the speed limit then why do something so blatantly distracting >.< *sighs*

To be fair, most motorists over here know that they're there and really couldn't give a shit. There is nothing that will slow someone down who is determined to speed.

LOL so very true lady. If ya wanna speed you wanna speed no line is gonna change that.

It's new over here and I can see a bit of disaster on the way with this...

They have them all over the place in London. Now I know what they are meant for! Stop signs are very easy and inexpensive to put in place, and will likely better prevent speeding than painted lines.

LOL don't feel alone most people had no clue either...who would even guess? It's such a random thing to do. And yes stop signs would be of much better use IMO

They don't have those lines around here but I do have to say that its just one more reason I'm glad I'm a pedestrian and not a driver!! :D
