Wrath was busy trying his hand at making a couple of green tea cheesecakes for the cookout tomorrow when Roy wandered into the kitchen. He saw this as a great opportunity to talk with the man since his husband had gone into town to run errands. He knew their guest still had a thing for Ed and it was apparent to Wrath that he wasn’t dealing with it well at all. He was either staring at Ed with love and desire in his eyes or with longing and regret.
For Wrath, it was painful to watch.
He liked Roy and it was obvious the man was hurting and he would like to help if he could. As much as Al seemed to respect Roy when the man had hurt Ed, it made Al distance himself from the General. Something else was afoot as well. Al had come back from hunting down Ed the other day in a foul mood and he was muttering and cursing Roy in a way he hadn't done in a long time.
So it fell to Wrath to get the man talking. It was the least he could do. Roy had done a lot to help him adjust. It was only fair that he returned the favor.
“Need some help with that?” Roy asked.
“Sure as long as you realize I have no idea what I’m doing.”
Roy chuckled and said, “That makes two of us so this should be interesting if nothing else.”
“I plan on using all of you as my guinea pigs for some new recipes tomorrow.”
“Fine by me that beats being one for the military any day.”
Wrath was glad they had something to keep them busy while they talked. He still had issues maintaining eye contact with people and he had a feeling even if that wasn’t the case, Roy wasn’t going to be looking at him much once the conversation started. This was a sensitive subject and Wrath was going to try his best not to make it worse.
“So how are things going? Is the research on those arrays and formulas moving along.”
“It’s slow but we’ll get there.”
“I noticed you haven’t been over there in a couple of days so I was wondering if something was wrong.”
“No nothing’s wrong with the research.”
“I wasn’t just asking about the research,” Wrath said as he added sugar to the large bowl.
Roy was quiet for a while as he organized his thoughts, “To be honest I think I may have complicated things.”
“Because you told Ed how you still feel about him.”
“He told you guys huh?”
“No but I could see it coming and when you offered to walk him home I assumed it was to talk to him,” Wrath said as he beat four eggs thoroughly before adding them to the mixture.
“Have I been that obvious?”
“Yes,” Wrath answered honestly, as he nudged the tea powder toward Roy, “I think the only one who has not noticed is Ed. But you know when it comes to things of this nature he is terribly oblivious.”
“Yes its one of the many things I adore about him,” Roy replied as he measured out a tablespoon of green tea powder and set it aside.
Roy then told Wrath what he’d said to Ed by the lake, Ed’s shock at his words and Al’s sudden appearance. Wrath listened quietly as Roy told his tale and thought hard on what advice, if any, he could offer.
“I don’t know if I should feel relieved or ticked at Al’s bad timing. I didn’t get an answer to my question,” Roy said as he continued to stir the ingredients Wrath had dumped in the bowl.
This was quite the dilemma, Wrath wasn’t the best judge of a person’s character but he was an excellent reader of body language. In his opinion, Ed still carried some feelings Roy. It’s not that he did anything obvious like Roy’s blatant drooling and stares. No, with Ed it was little things. He always smiled softly when Roy walked in the room, the way he leaned in a bit closer than necessary when talking with Roy. The real kicker for Wrath was how easily they still interacted. An observant person could easily mistake them for lovers.
Current lovers.
Al had refused to see what Wrath saw in Ed’s behavior toward Roy. Thereby sparking one of those things they agreed to disagree on. However, after seeing and hearing whatever he had walked in on between the two by the lake he was up in arms over the thought that Ed may still be entertaining some romantic notions concerning Roy.
“Well it’s been two days, I say you go get your answer.”
“You’re a man of action I see.”
“The way I see it if you get your answer, regardless of what it is, you will at least know. I’ve been there Roy. Sometimes it's better to hurt a lot for a little while instead of wallowing in pain every day for weeks or months... possibly years.”
Roy dropped his head and let the spoon rest against the side of the bowl. He looked so miserable Wrath felt the need to comfort the man. He knew what it was like to be in a situation that felt hopeless. The feeling made each day a little longer and more tiring than the one before.
“You’re hurting Roy and anyone that took the time to stop and look would see it. Get your answer so you can move on. Don’t prolong your suffering, do something about it.”
“I’ll ask him again after the cookout if he doesn’t answer me before then.”
“Good,” Wrath said as he took the bowl and spooned the mixture into the crust, “but I’m gonna warn you now Al is not happy about this at all.”
“I got that impression from the way he decided I was no longer escorting his beloved Brother home.”
“Be prepared for worse if Ed says he feels the same,” Wrath added.
“You don’t seem bothered by this at all,” Roy said as he gave the other man a perplexed look.
“It’s because I’m not bothered by it. It’s not my business. As far as I’m concerned it’s between you and Ed…and Russell.”
“Yeah I have a feeling no matter what happens I’m going to get hurt in some manner by a blonde man with a bad temper.”
Wrath couldn’t help the chuckle that escaped as he realized that was a perfect blanket description for Al, Ed and Russell, “Yeah and people say redheads are the ones with a temper.”
“You couple their tempers with the fact they are all highly skilled alchemists and my chances of coming out of this alive drop significantly.”
“You like to play dangerous games General, good luck. You’re going to need it.”
“All joking aside,” Roy said turning serious once more, “I meant it when I said I didn’t want to take him away from Russell. He deserves the happiness he’s found.”
“Well then what are you going to do if he says he still loves you?”
“I don’t know and I think that’s why I’m not rushing his answer.”
“Well sounds to me like one of those situations you just have to play by ear and take day by day.”
Roy nodded as he took his finger and scooped up some of the residue out of the mixing bowl, “I suppose you’re right.”
Silence fell over them as Wrath placed the cheesecakes in the oven. He wasn’t sure how good his advice to Roy was but the one thing Wrath was positive about was his husband’s reaction if he ever found out he’d counseled Roy on the matter. Oh well, he’d deal with it if it happened.
He knows Al is protective of Ed where Roy is concerned but Wrath believed in giving second chances. Where would he be without that same opportunity?
