How could you do this to me how! HOW!

How could you just stop in the middle of everything? In the center of all that fighting, gunfire and chaos and bring it all to a halt for me with three words?
I love you.
Then, like it was nothing, you stoop down and press your hands to the forest floor. Blinding blue alchemical light erupts from your hands. Several walls of dirt shoot up around me, Riza and Jean. It dances and entwines before suddenly solidifying into something nearly as hard as stone.
The sounds of Armageddon rage on out there. By the time a get the array scratched out and our dirt prison dismantled it is done.
What it was I don’t know but it left damn near nothing in its wake.
…and there at the edge of it all is you. So covered in soot, burns and debris you nearly blend in with the destroyed landscape.
I rush to your side and the instant I touch you I know you won’t leave this battlefield alive. You insured our victory but at a price I wasn’t willing to have you pay. You’re so still, so injured, so lifeless I fear you’re already gone. When my hand touches your face, glazed over golden eyes crack open. You open your mouth to speak and a horrid rasping sound steals your voice before a series of coughs rack your battered body.
“Did… did it work?”
When my own voice fails me as I look down at you Riza answers.
“Yes Edward, it did. Whatever you did took all of them out. There is nothing between us and the gates.”
“G… good. Make… make’em pay.”
The fire dies out in your eyes, your body goes limp and something in me shatters.
I love you.
Years I’ve waited for you, for this moment and when it comes it’s gone before I can grasp it.
I love you.
I kiss lips that have danced through my mind for years for the first and the last time before I stand. Facing their stronghold I draw an array on the ground and when I activate it the remaining trees around the fortress fold in on the structure. Standing up I look down at you once more before I snap.
Riza’s screaming at me not to do it. She’s pleading with me to take their leader alive to face his punishment. She wants to let justice handle this and for me not to become judge, jury and executioner.
Her words are falling on deaf ears.
It’s a good thing Jean is holding her back because nothing is going to stop me. She may as well not get hurt trying to do so. They sent their ruthless mechanical monsters after us and I’m doing nothing more than giving as good as I got.
They wanted death so I’m going to deliver it to them. Gift-wrapped in fire and tied with my rage.
…and in the process I’m going to burn my retribution into each and every one of their miserable souls.
