The look on your face is priceless. I knew you’d be surprised at all the hard work I’ve done. I’m even impressed with myself. I couldn't believe I remembered so many details, everything from the color of the lamp on the dresser, to the pattern of the quilt on your bed.
“It’s just like stepping back in time isn't it Brother?”
Your perfect face grows pale and you start shaking your head back and forth, but I can explain.
“I know my bed is missing and we didn't have a bathroom connected to our room like this one has but other than that don’t you think it’s exactly the same? Doesn't it look just like our old room?”
You don’t answer me but it’s ok. I can only imagine how big a surprise this has to be for you. I walk away from you, cross the room and sit down on the bed. As I run my hand over the hand stitched quilt I've replicated, my mind wanders back to the first time I knew you were destined to be mine.
You had just come out of the bath. Your hair was still wet and lying on your shoulders because you hadn't cut it in months. Even though we’d both just exercised and bathed you dropped and did twenty-five more push-ups. You did them with no problem and looking smug, you crawled into bed.
I can remember admiring your strength and longing to touch muscles that were just forming even if I didn't know why. I remember the uncomfortable tightness in my pajamas and wondering what had caused it.
I also remember how it felt to relieve that tightness and how I thought about you the entire time.
I’m always thinking about you Brother… I don’t think I’ll ever stop.
