amethyst_koneko I took one look at her icon last week and this plot bunny took over my brain.
Roy returned to his apartment after yet another less than successful date on a Friday night ready to throw in the relationship towel.
Was it really so much to ask that he wander into another halfway intelligent soul that was looking for love, laughs, conversation and nights in front of the fireplace? Was he truly the only person left in this city that had read a book in the last three years? Was he the only one on this side of the country that thought conversation over wine was entertaining?
As he hung his coat up on the rack by the door the familiar sound of soft hurried footsteps reached his ears. Yes that sound was one of the few things Roy had to look forward to day in and day out. Smiling, Roy knew he’d find the golden-eyed whiskered face of his cat when he turned around. Sure enough, once the coat was hung Roy could feel the soft reassuring pressure of a fur topped head pressing against his legs as Edo treated him to his usual welcome.
Edo was a yellow and orange cat that had wide golden eyes and Roy loved the stray dearly. The cat that was little more than a kitten had come into his life by chance shortly after his job caused him to transfer three hundred miles from anybody and everything he knew and loved. It was a grand, and financially fruitful, endeavor but it had left him feeling isolated and alone. He found the people in his new city difficult to warm up to.
In an attempt to develop some sort of comforting routine Roy had taken to eating in the same park from the same vendor twice a week. Each time he was there, the little feline sat beside him on the bench and kept him company as he ate. One day a few months ago he told the vendor that he had one of the smartest cats he’d even run into. Imagine Roy’s shock when the man said, “He not my cat. In fact I only see him when you come around. I think he’s a stray.”
Stunned but not looking a gift horse in the mouth Roy had taken the lovable little fur ball home and the two had been happily cohabitating ever since. They did everything together. Each day when Roy ate dinner he even put Edo’s food on a regular plate which sat on the table not far from his and the two ate together in companionable silence. When dinner was over Roy washed dishes as Edo sat on the edge of the sink and watched. Once that was all done the two of them retreated to the living room where Roy petted and talked to his feline companion about his day.
Today was more of the same and when bedtime came Roy climbed into bed only to be followed by Edo. As the cat purred under Roy’s touch Roy sighed and said, “I wish I could find a person as perfect as you are. Life would be complete.”
With that said Roy drifted off into a dreamless sleep.

When he woke up he could feel stands of his hair being lifted and a smile graced his lips. Edo has always had a thing for his hair. The cat played with it every chance that presented itself. It was Saturday and there was no need to get up and moving so Roy was just about to roll over and sleep some more when what should have been a paw felt an awful lot like fingers running through his hair.
Dark eyes shot open and when he turned to face the originator of the sensation the face looking back at him had Roy fighting not to scream.
“Good morning Roy. Did you sleep well?”
Confused and scared out of his mind Roy scrambled around in the bed until he ended up tumbling to the floor. When he opened his eyes, there hovering over the edge of the bed, was the face of a handsome young man with long blond hair. The smile the man was giving him was grand and oddly familiar. It wasn’t until Roy looked into golden eyes he’d know anywhere that he realized who he was looking at.
“Edo?”
“In the flesh,” the young man replied as one hand went up to his head to rub the cat-like ears poking out from his head. “Well, almost,” Edo finished as a look of concentration took over his face.
Roy watched in horrified amazement as the ears shrank until they disappeared. He was about to comment on that when they popped back out and Edo scowled at him.
“Could you please quit thinking of me as a cat now?”
“Uh… sorry?” Roy said confused.
“I’ll never get rid of the ears and tail if you keep thinking about me as a fur ball.”
Roy sat up slowly, pinched his arm hard enough to leave a mark and looked up at the man on his bed. He didn’t appear to be dreaming but damn if it didn’t seem like it to Roy.
“But you are a cat… aren’t you? At least you were… right?” Roy asked as his mind began to question everything, especially his sanity.
“Yes and no,” Ed said as put both elbows on the bed and rested his chin on his entwined fingers. “I have looked like a cat for the past year to you but in truth I am no more a cat than I am the man you see in front of you now.”
Roy suddenly felt like he need a really stiff drink and that was sad considering it was only 8 O’clock in the morning. If Edo wasn’t a cat or a man what the hell was he?
As if he had read Roy’s mind Edo said, “I’m an Epimorph.”
“What?”
“An epimorph. We are creatures that respond to the emotions and needs of the person that brought us to this world.”
“But far as I know I didn’t bring you anywhere. The only thing I’m aware of is picking you up at the park.”
“Long complicated story short, we are beings of energy that reside ‘behind the scenes’ of your world, for lack of a better term. Every once in a while the needs of one of you is strong enough to breach the wall between us and allows us to exist over here. Even then we are usually confined to a certain area.”
“Like the park.”
“Exactly, I was surprised when I was able to come home with you. Looks like you really needed someone.”
“I did and you’ve been a great companion… but… but why are you human…” Roy looked at the tail wagging behind Ed, “well human-ish now?”
“Because,” Ed began as he leaned forward until his lips were a hairs breadth away from Roy’s ear, “now it seems you need more than a mere friend.”
Roy jumped back away from Edo and tried to gather his composure.
“Oh… okay but why are you a guy? Are you always going to be male? Do empimorhs have genders?
“No we don’t have genders and I’m a male because that’s what you want me to be. You decide what I look like, not me.”
“So If I really wanted you to be six foot redhead with giant breasts that’s what you would turn into?”
“It’s not that superficial. This,” Ed said as he motioned down his body, “is a manifestation of your soul’s true desire, not some whim and certainly not some society pleasing, keeping up with the Jones’s kind of thing.”
“Oh,” was all Roy said as he looked down at his clasped hands. He had considered the less than straight tendencies that resided in his sexuality before but had never really sought to actually define himself as anything other than just another heterosexual man on the prowl. Certain things were just too taboo. Roy was already feeling like a stranger in a strange land. He didn’t feel the need to add anything to that.
“Is something wrong?” Edo asked, worried by the tension in Roy’s posture and his silence.
“No… yes… not really but… yeah maybe.”
“Wow… it’s a good thing I’ve had quite a while to get to know you. That made no sense,” Edo said as he sat up and draped his legs over the side of the bed. One full body stretch later and Roy got a damn fine look at a completely naked Edo.
Blood was rushing to so many different places at once Roy thought he might pass out.
“I guess we need to get you some clothes.”
“Why,” Edo asked as the soft smile on his face morphed into a wicked smirk, “we both know you would just want to take them off.”
“Well you can’t roam around naked!”
“Why not?”
“Because… well because most people just don’t do that.”
Edo curled his tail around his well muscled waist, ran his hand over the furred appendage and said, “And I strike you as run of the mill how?”
Roy sighed and slumped against the wall. He knew a losing battle when he saw one.
“Come on,” Edo said as he repositioned himself on the bed. “Let’s go back to sleep neither one of us wants to be up this early on a Saturday.”
When Roy didn’t move Edo patted the empty spot on the bed insistently. Sighing in defeat Roy got up and climbed back into bed. What’s the worst that could happen anyway?
