Edouard looked at the man he’d run over in confusion.

He seemed upset yet he was asking about a farm animal. Deciding to shrug it off and apologize, Ed stood up and in the process he noticed the overturned carton of food. He extended his hand to the man and apologized to him as he introduced himself.

“Je plains cogner vous en bas monsieur je ne vous ai pas vu dans ma hâte. Pouvoir je vous rembourse pour votre repas.”

Roy had no idea what he had just said to him and sighed.

It was so par for the course.

Realizing he hadn’t completely understood the man’s earlier shout Edouard looked at the stranger’s attire and determined he was probably an American tourist. Taking a deep breath Ed attempted to use what little English he knew.

“Is monsieur de American?”

Delighted that the issue was now known to both of them Roy replied, “Yes… I mean oui.”

Ed smiled at the man and tried to figure out a way to communicate.

“Name monsieur?”

“Uh… Roy.”

“Ehroy?”

“No… uh non just Roy,” Roy stammered.

“Justroy?”

“Roy.”

“Roy.”

They both looked frustrated after that but it was at least one hurdle crossed.

Roy could tell Ed was trying hard with his English so he decided to give his French his all. He managed to deduce Ed wanted to repay him for the meal and when Roy refused the young man tugged on his arm until Roy got that he wanted him to follow wherever he was going.

Figuring he had nothing to lose, especially since he was hungry and lost, he followed. This seemed to make Ed’s day and he all but skipped down the cobblestone streets. That type of joy was infectious and Roy smiled for the first time in days.

When they reached a decent sized flat the moment Ed walked in another voice rang out. Spewing a litany of French words Roy didn’t understand but it was obvious the owner was upset and upset with Ed. When the owner of the voice came into view it was another young man that looked so much like Ed their relation was obvious.

He was in the midst of apologizing when Ed stopped him and let him know Roy was American.

He rubbed is chin for a moment before smiling wide and rushing off.

Confused Ed merely shrugged and they both waited.

I'd never read the 1st 3 from this set, so I went back & read them. I can now see how 3 and 4 connect brilliantly. Perhaps the fact that Roy's name sounds a bit like the word for king could serve as inspiration?
