I need to make up my mind.
As I look in the bathroom mirror the man looking back at me nearly shouts, “I thought we already had.”
“This is a big decision.”
“It’s the right decision.”
“But that would put a lot of pressure on Ed and Roy.”
“They are big boys, they can handle it.”
“But what if I fuck it up? What if I actually can’t do this?”
“And you would be the first man to fail at something?”
“No, but I don’t do failure.”
“Good because neither do I.”
“So we’re going to do this?”
“Yes we are and we’re going to be damn good at it too.”
With that decided Russell leaves the bathroom, walks down the steps and into the den where Ed and Roy were reading.
Roy looks over his paper as Ed puts down his book.
“I’m going to do it,” I announce and they both smile at me.
I hope the world is ready for Dr. Russell Anthony Tringham.

In interdisciplinary fields that have such a wide variety of background knowledge (like *ahem* biological alchemy) what is traditionally done is a short research project with a mini-defense with your committee. This means it is you, your research and a blackboard. They can grill you on nearly anything they feel like. Lots of departments will not let you continue if you don't pass on your 2nd try.
Lots of people say (which I totally think is absurd) that it is best to practice by imagining your audience naked to get over nervousness.
Okay now that you have the background, How about Roy and Ed try to help Russ practice for his qualifiers by seriously grilling him while ACTUALLY being naked!
