The weekend arrives I have to listen to your tales of Ed and the great time you had. You managed to get him out and about alone twice and you're on cloud nine.
Thinking it would shut you up I say, "Why don't you just ask him on a real date?"
Your answer of, "I think I will," stuns me silent.
I hadn't considered you gathering the nerve and going for it. I have no plan for that.
When I remain quiet you ask me what's wrong, I distract you with a beer. I don't want to think about this.

If luck is with me your anger will fade and still leave you with a distaste for him. Two weeks have passed, things are looking good for me and if that happens I'm asking you out on a real date.
I'm whistling as I walk to the market. Just when I thought nothing could burst my bubble, it pops with such force I nearly stumble and fall.
There you are with him, at an open air café, eating, talking and he's got the charm turned up so high I can feel it from across the street.
I need a smoke.

I know Hughes is probably behind you showing up on my doorstep and waving the white flag but I fold anyway. Being upset with you takes too much effort once my anger is spent.
You look like such a kicked puppy when I open my door I couldn't have told you to go to hell again if my life had depended on it.
You offer to buy me lunch and I cave, as I always do, even though your presence tortures me as much as it excites me.
I say yes and your smile almost makes the pain worth it.

You come by my house and ask if I've made peace with Ed.
When I say yes, you're all smiles before draping your arm across my shoulders, an action that sets my heart racing even though I know it's just you being your normally boisterous self and nothing more.
You say the case is as good as solved now that we have Ed back in our corner.
I smile despite the fact that I miss being the smartest person you know. I can't have the place I want in your life, did I have to lose the consolation prize too?
