Roy hated being on this side of a disagreement with Ed.
That side being the in the wrong side.
If the look on Ed’s face right before he left without saying a word hadn’t been bad enough, Maes coming over and scolding Roy had really drove it home.
Roy had come home to the sight of what looked like the most ramshackle Christmas tree he’d ever seen in the corner of his living room. Ed had popped out yelling surprise and Roy had launched into a rant about it and Ed had left somberly without saying a word.
Less than an hour later, Hughes showed up on his doorstep looking more pissed than he’d seen him in a long while.
“You’ve really fucked up this time Roy Boy.”
“What?”
“I can’t believe you chewed Ed out for this.”
“It was nothing more than him making a poor attempt to pacify my wish for a little holiday spirit.”
“Did you ever consider just the tree alone was quite giving of Ed considering he’s Agnostic and doesn’t feel the same as you do about this time of year?”
“If you would come look at this tree you’d understand why I was upset.”
“Speaking of looking at the tree did you even bother?”
“Of course I did.”
“Well if you did you are truly not the person I thought you were.”
That line made Roy turn on his heels and head back to the living room leaving Maes to trail behind him. At first it still looked like a hodgepodge mess to him. But the one shiny so called ornament amongst the many caught his eye. Stepping closer Roy examined it and found that is was a key. Not just any key it was the Key he’d given Ed to the Apartment he’d lived in when they were first dating.
This made Roy examine the other odd ornaments on the tree and the realization of what he had missed in his swift judgment of Ed’s surprise had him feeling like a complete heel.
One of the many pieces of paper dangling from the tree was the ticket stubs from the first play they’d ever gone to together. Another was a receipt from the Inn they had stayed in on their vacation last year.
Roy turned and looked at Maes and the man was silently shaking his head.
The little box hanging from the tree was the box that had once held the rings they both now wear. The only round ornament on the tree was the tennis ball that Ed had slipped on a few months ago. He had fallen into Roy and they had both ended up in the Emergency room. The ball itself was hung with the arm bracelets they give you when you show up. Memory after memory was what Ed had decorated their tree with and Roy had been too damn shallow to see it.
“This tree may not be a traditional one Roy but it was decorated with more thought and love than any tree I’ve ever seen. Ed may not be one for the holidays in the same sense that we are but he loves you and I think that’s what this tree is about. Not Christmas.”
“I can see that now,” Roy said as he tried to swallow past the lump in his throat. “I can’t believe he did all of this for me.
“Me either,” Maes replied honestly.
Roy looked at his friend again and asked, “how do I fix this?”
“I’m not sure but I suggest you start trying something soon or you’ll be sitting here looking at this tree alone for your beloved holiday.
“Is he still at your place?”
“He left the house right before I came over here.”
“I think I know where he went,” Roy said as he grabbed his coat. Pulling it on he thanked Maes for opening his eyes to the obvious and headed for the overlook.
Sure enough Ed was there and when Roy walked up to him he stiffened and said, “Don’t worry I’ll take it down as soon as I get back home.”
“You don’t have to.”
“Why not?” Ed asked and the hurt and anger in his tone was evident. “Have you gotten rid of it already?”
“No I haven’t and I won’t. I love that tree and I’m sorry I didn’t take time to see all the work you’d put into it when I first saw it.”
“Whatever,” Ed snorted. “I’m a big boy and I’ll get over it so you don’t have to pretend to like it just because Hughes gave you a hard time. I know he probably showed up.”
“I won’t lie he did but I’m not pretending. Once I pulled my head out of my ass long enough to see what was probably the most thoughtful thing anyone has ever done for me, I truly do love it. Even though I don’t deserve it, can you forgive me?”
Ed stood beside him silently for so long Roy’s heart sank. He was wracking his brain for more words to grovel with when Ed said, “Steak.”
“Steak?”
“Yes Steak, spicy noodles and all the rolls I can eat.”
“I can arrange that,” Roy replied as a smile slid across his face.
“Not so fast old man that would be too easy. I think that tongue of yours needs to be put to better use as well and I have a list of ideas that could keep it busy for at least two weeks.”
Roy chuckled and tapped Ed on the shoulder. When the blonde turned around Roy figured he may as well start putting his tongue to good use and kissed Ed just this side of senseless.
“I don’t deserve you,” Roy said when he ended the kiss as he looked into the golden eyes he’d grown to love so much.
“I know that but I’ll hang around anyway.”
“You sure?”
“Yup, loves pretty hard to come by, don’t think I want to give up on it just yet.”
“I’m a lucky man.”
“I know that but so am I.”
