Title: Into the Abyss
Fandom: FMA
Pairing: Maes/Roy
Rating: T
Words: 939
Roy had been acting a more than a little odd and Maes was going to get to the bottom of it if it killed him. Picking up the phone, he asked the operator to patch him through to Roy’s office. When the man answered, they made idle chitchat for a while before Maes asked Roy to join him for lunch. When Roy declined Maes remained undaunted and asked, “Well how about grabbing a drink with me after work then?”
When that was refuted too, Maes grew suspicious. It wasn’t that Roy couldn’t have a life outside of him but this was the sixth time in the past two weeks that Roy has blown him off. Maes didn’t cause a fuss on the phone, no he was too clever for that. He hung up with a simple, “Ok maybe another time then.”
The workday trudged by and when it was time to leave Maes didn’t head home, he headed downtown. If he knew anything, it was that Roy Mustang was creature of habit. Two bars later Maes was standing behind that creature pondering the words, he was going to use.
“So you’d rather sit here alone than with an old friend?”
Roy spun around so fast Maes thought he actually might fall off his bar stool.
“Maes…”
“I’m glad you remember me. I’m surprised, since you’ve been avoiding me for a month.”
Roy’s head dropped at those words and when he looked up Maes had to fight not to step back. Obsidian eyes were looking at him with such an overwhelming mix of emotion he thought he might drown in it. It brought to mind a quote from one of his favorite philosophers: And if you gaze for long into an abyss, the abyss gazes also into you.
He could feel whatever it was that was eating Roy up inside boring into him as well. He suddenly felt guilty for cornering him as he had. Gone was the too cocky and self assured man he’d known for years and there sat someone that not only looked frightened but lost as well.
“I know I owe you an explanation but,” Roy looked around the populated bar, tossed down a few cens and pushed his beer away, “but not here.” Maes simply nodded and followed his forlorn friend out of the bar.
As they walked toward Roy’s house, he tried to engage his friend in conversation but only received one-word responses. Once they reached Roy’s house the man continued to avoid eye contact with Maes even as he offered him something to eat and drink.
As Roy stood in front of his cupboard, pulling down glasses Maes walked up behind him, placed a hand on each shoulder and said, “What I really want is to know what has you acting like this.”
Roy turned around to face his friend, an action that left them little more than a breath apart and fought for words.
Those eyes were back. Was all Maes could think as he watched Roy struggle for words. He looked so uncomfortable Maes stepped back and scrutinized his best friend. When Roy let out an actual sigh of relief Maes was hurt, confused and a whole other assortment of things he couldn’t name.
It really was him that Roy was avoiding.
“What did I do?”
“You didn’t do anything, Maes.”
“Bullshit Roy. You’ve be avoiding me and now you’re treating me like I have some sort of plague. What did I do?”
Roy leaned on the counter and pinched the bridge of his nose. His posture screamed tense and Maes couldn’t stand it. Those eyes returned to meet his once more, sifting through the layers of his soul. He didn’t know what they are looking for but he hoped they found it. The weight of that gaze was hard to bear, “Can I be honest with you?”
“Of course you can, Roy,” Maes said with a smile, happy to be getting somewhere. "Just remember a little sincerity is a dangerous thing, and a great deal of it is absolutely fatal," Maes joked trying to lighten the mood.
“I’m willing to risk it,” Roy said as he looked away once more. “As it is, this may be the death of me if I don’t deal with it soon.”
Worried once more Maes approached Roy only to have the man nearly jump away in his haste to make sure Maes didn’t touch him. Maes was fed up with this, “What the fuck is wrong with you Roy? I don’t bite!”
“Maybe I wish you would,” Roy snapped back before he thought better of it.
Maes just stared at him with his mouth open, completely confused.
“It won’t go away,” Roy mumbled. “I’ve tried to ignore it, I’ve tried to bury it, hell I even tried to work through it and rationalize it away.”
“What? I don’t understand…”
“I love you and I don’t mean in a brotherly sense. I want you in ways that I know are wrong, in ways I know I can’t have you but no matter what I try this damned desire I have for you won’t go away.”
Maes didn’t know how to reply to that, but as he found himself crossing the room toward the man that was trembling with the effort it took to restrain the emotion he was feeling he came to a conclusion. A conclusion that he solidified with a searing kiss that made his soul sing as the other man melted in his arms.
He had stared into the abyss too long. Because God help him…he was now consumed by it.
