Russell knew he’d fucked up. Ed generally wasn’t one to hold a grudge; from what he’s been told, Al has the market cornered on that. No, what Ed did instead was far worse and far more devious.

He acted as if nothing was wrong.

He walked around the house doing his normal thing only with a little less talk paired with a little more snarkiness and sarcasm. For example, one of Russell’s colleges called and Ed answered the phone. Instead of merely calling for Russell he yelled, “Russell, it’s the thirty year old guy that still sleeps in his mother’s attic on the phone for you!”

Then when he got off the phone with John and Russell shot him a dirty look since John overheard Ed’s comment the only thing Ed had to say in his defense was, “Oh I’m sorry. That was probably a little rude wasn’t it?”

Russell had already initiated plan, ‘get back on Ed’s good side’ with phase one aka the impromptu blow job on the back porch now it was time to initiate phase two which was suggest something selfless that would make Ed remember Russell wasn’t a total bastard.

So as Russell prepared Ed’s much beloved noodles and beef for dinner he asked Ed what he thought about having a cookout with Al, Wrath and Roy this upcoming Saturday. Ed peeked over the newspaper he was reading at Russell and gave him a questioning look. When Russell met that look with one filled with as much wide-eyed innocence and sincerity as he could muster Ed simply smiled at him and said, “Sure sounds like fun to me, anything involving food rocks in my book. I’ll ask them about it tomorrow.”

Dinner went over well and Ed refrained from doing anything that reminded Russell about how rude he had been to Wrath and Al. As night approached without further incident, Russell had high hopes of initiating phrase three.

The massage.

Now a lot of times phase three would lead into phase four but he didn’t think tonight would be one of those times. He’d put his foot in his mouth way too many times to be forgiven so easily. Yes as much as Russell would like to end the night screaming Ed’s name he wasn’t counting on it.

Once Ed announced he was going to shower then turn in Russell made quick work of cleaning the kitchen and dragging out the massage oils, the herbalist had made himself. By the time Ed strolled into their bedroom the lights were dim, the sheets were fresh and a shirtless blond was lying on one side of the bed waiting on him.

Ed cocked an eyebrow at his lover in curiosity but all it took was Russell shaking the massage oil at his lover for it all to become clear. Ed gave Russell a broad smile, dropped his towel and lay down naked in the empty spot on the bed.

Russell worked slowly and deliberately massaging Ed’s body. It amazed him that even after almost two years working in a lab and not out traipsing across the globe Ed was still built like a small tank. Well defined arms, legs and chiseled abs were his playground now and if he could never come up with anything else to thank the military for he had to thank them for that.

As Russell worked his hands down Ed’s back, his fingers move over a scar he’s always wondered about. Not that it was strange for Ed to have scars the man was fighting Chimera’s and mad scientists before he was old enough to vote and that alone guaranteed that he would have a few scars. However, this one scar stood out, it was slightly raised and almost angry looking. Anytime Russell asked about it Ed just blew him off saying he didn’t remember the story behind every scar he had, that if he kept records of such things he’d need his own library.

Russell must have lingered too long because Ed asked, “You still awake back there, Russ?”

“Sorry my mind wandered for a bit,” Russell replied. He was about to resume the massage when a strong hand wrapped around his wrist.
“You’re really sorry aren’t you?”

“Excuse me!” Russell exclaimed clearly indignant.

Ed chuckled and said, “Not sorry like that, sorry as in feeling bad for being a prick the other day.”

“Oh that,” Russell said as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck. Face flushed red with embarrassment for mistaking Ed’s words.

“Come here,” Ed said, as he propped himself up on one elbow and pulled Russell down and curled himself around his lover.

Warm lips found their way to Russell’s neck as his flesh hand slowly trailed down Russell’s chest, “I do love it when you go all out to say you’re sorry.”

“Well I’m not doing it just so you won’t be mad. Sure, that’s part of it but I regret my actions. Al and Wrath have been good to me even though I know it would make Al’s week if you tossed me out on my ass.”

“What makes you say that?” Ed asked even though he knew Russell was right. He was merely curious as to why Russell thought so. He knows Al isn’t one to voice such things without being provoked.

“Might have something to do with the fact that every chance he gets he says, ‘you’re lucky brother loves you and for some reason Wrath finds you amusing.’ He also always looks at then to you like he’s trying to figure out what in the hell you were thinking getting with me.”

Ed chuckled low and Russell folded his arms across his chest, not amused in the least, “I think you could be a little more comforting.”

“Oh come off it Russ, he wouldn’t be my brother if he wasn’t critical of my lovers.”

Russell rolled over so he was facing Ed with a scowl on his face, “Well he certainly doesn’t seem to have a problem with Roy.”

Something in Ed’s mind caused his features to darken before he said, “Trust me, the two of them have had their differences.”

Russell wanted to ask but he knew better. Nothing ruined a good mood between the two of them quicker than discussing Roy Mustang. So, for now Russell decided to let the sleeping dog lie and snuggled back into Ed’s offered embrace.
