++++++ +++++
Edward Elric was furious. He had no great hate for the military any longer, hence his continued enlistment, but he had no great love for it either. His continued service was mostly due the the fact that he’s been a soldier for so long he had a hard time picturing himself doing anything else. If you wanted to wrap the reasoning up with a nice little sexy bow there was also Roy, and not just Roy as one of the men he loved but Roy as the man that would one day be sitting behind the desk in the place of the current smirking bastard. The same smirking bastard that was behind Al and Russell suddenly becoming State Alchemists.
If the Führer had been any other man pulling this sort of bullshit stunt he’d have a face full of metal fist and an ass full of Alchemy. Ed was not a person to be trifled with. A few people had been dumb enough to try and what was left of them had to be scraped up after Ed was done with them. He had a unique and violent way of correcting a person’s behavior when they were stupid enough to cross him.
After taking a deep breath that was nowhere near as calming as he had hoped, Ed looked over at his eldest lover and despite his calm looking demeanor, he knew Roy was seething.
Ed was correct. Roy Mustang was seething. Seething to the point where he had removed his gloves the moment his mind had wrapped around what he was seeing. He no longer trusted his temper and no matter how much the current Führer liked him, he knew snapping on the man would not be forgiven. Once he made eye contact with Ed his temper had flared even higher. Ed had a pretty decent reign on his infamous temper these days but the sight before them had set him on edge and seeing him that wound up had Roy fighting the urge to fry the source.
Yes, Roy Mustang and Edward Elric were livid. The shock of seeing Al and Russell dressed as enlisted soldiers and decorated as Majors had worn off and that overwhelmed feeling that accompanied surprise had shifted into anger.
What the fuck was the Führer playing at?
“Fullmetal. Flame. You can both wipe those looks off your faces right now and use that energy to start adjusting. You know as well as anyone, my word is law.”
“I understand that,” Roy began calmly, “we both…”
“Al! Russ! Out of this room! Now!,” Ed bellowed. Fury radiating off him in waves.
“Brother we…”
“That lone star on your shoulder says I outrank you both. I. Said. Go!”
A smirk slid across the Führer’s face and when he didn’t contest the order both Al and Russell left the room.
“See, ordering them into action won’t be as hard as you thought, Mustang. Elric is already in the spirit of things!”
“You can fuck off,” Ed snarled at the Head of State.
“Ed!” Roy snapped, “I know you’re pissed but you can’t…”
“I can, and I fucking will! I don’t give a shit what title this smirking bastard has. No one plays games with my family! NO. ONE.”
“Führer Sir, I…”
Matthias Omari, held up his hand silencing Roy. With his previous smirk, bastardly as it was, still firmly in place he said, “No need to worry Mustang. Your lover hasn’t used that vicious tongue of his on me in at least two years. I think I’m long overdue.”
“If that’s the fucking case then you won’t mind me telling you how you can bend over, take this idea of yours and…”
“Edward!”
“Oh, he’s really angry this time isn’t he?”
“Yes,” Roy said as he took in a deep breath, “he is and frankly so am I. As I said before, with all due respect, what is the meaning of this?”
“You know I needed to complete the team for Operation Paladin,” Omari began as he stood and crossed the room. Ed’s furious eyes never left his form and if a heated gaze could kill, the man would have melted to slag in mid stride.
“Yes, I thought Ross and Brosh were going to fill the remaining spots.”
“I had considered that when you two suggested it but Hughes brought up a valid point.”
“And that point was?”
“That the City is going to need capable and seasoned soldiers to defend it when the shit hits the fan. By the time you take down base two they are going to have Operation Paladin pegged for what it is. They may not have the resources to mount a counterattack on your team and on the City but if they do, we cannot be left without decent defense.”
“But there are so many others enlisted. Why bring in civilians?”
“Do not play me for a fool Mustang. Alphonse was all but enlisted with his brother and I do believe it took three soldiers and two alchemists to free Harcourt from the wall of an abandoned building several months ago. Tringham’s handy work I assume?”
“Yes but…”
“But nothing we could use more combat ready alchemists for Paladin and they are two of the best around,” he replied as he opened a cabinet, pulled out three glasses and a bottle of scotch.
“You can give all of the reasons you fucking want but the bottom line is no!” Ed growled.
The Führer’s shoulders shook in amusement as he poured them each a drink, “Some of the higher ups think me odd for putting up with your temperament Elric. Not I. Personally, I like your spirit. I have enough yes men. I don’t need any more.”
Teeth clenched in barely contained rage Ed asked, “Why did you do this? You had to know I’d lose my shit so out with it.”
“The reasons are as I have already stated,” Omari replied as he motioned for them to take the offered drinks. Roy picked his up and took a tense sip but Ed snatched his up, knocked it back and slammed the empty glass down hard enough to crack it’s base.
“Fine you want the cold harsh truth let’s have at it. Could either of you tell me they would stay put as I sent you both off on an M class mission? If you can say so honestly I’ll undo this right now.”
Ed’s teeth were grinding so hard Roy thought he heard one crack. Roy wasn’t faring much better on the inside even if he was being less obvious about it. The fact he couldn’t combat what the Führer had said made it all the more infuriating. If the two men standing on the other side of the great mahogany desk were honest with each other, this topic was something they had both lost more than a little sleep over the closer Paladin was to activation.
“That’s what I thought,” Omari said as he replaced Ed’s fractured glass with another one and filled it half way. “The bottom line is we need all the skill we can get to pull this off and the last thing I need is the two of them tearing up my countryside looking for the two of you. There’s too much at stake here.”
“You could have told us,” Roy said before finishing his own drink and setting it down with a lot more care than Ed had managed. He was going to need more scotch because the look on Ed’s face said this conversation may cost the Führer several glasses and possibly his neck if he didn’t say something to calm Ed down.
“And ruin what little fun I get to have? Not on your life.”
Personally, at this point, Roy was willing to let Ed take his wrath out on the Führer in any way Ed saw fit.Professionally, however, Roy knew he Couldn’t let Ed rip the man the new asshole Ed wanted to give him.
“This is still bullshit!”
“Call it what you want Mr. Elric but it is bullshit you have to abide by. As you said to Wildcard and Patronus earlier I outrank you so deal with it.”
“Wildcard and Patronus?”
“Their alchemist titles. One of the better perks of this job. Naming my alchemists. Al is forever guarding and watchful and Russell, well you never know what he’s going to do. Rather fitting don’t you think?”
“I think you’re full of shit. How did you get them to keep quiet on this?” Ed said as he polished off the second scotch.
“I didn’t have to bribe them if that’s what you’re alluding to Fullmetal. I simply put everything from their uniforms to their appointment in motion before talking to them about this. They’ve only known a few hours before you found out,” Omari said as he brought his glass up to his lips. “I may be a lot of things but dense is not one of them. I knew their loyalty to you two would outrank or out weigh anything I told them to say or not say.”
“We don’t want them in this kind of danger,” Roy said, suddenly feeling exhausted. It’s been one helluva day.
“They are in more danger than they knew already, can you deny that?”
“No, but that fact is a far cry from placing them on the front lines.”
“It is but can either of you tell me there is a person assigned to Operation Paladin you trust more than them to watch your back?”
Ed and Roy exchanged a look and the Führer’s smirk melted into a genuine smile. He knew the feel of victory and the look of concession when it came his way.
“You haven’t heard the last of this,” Ed growled.
“I know I haven’t but I look forward to our dance each and every time, Fullmetal.”
