It was summer so we were all out at lakeside cabin owned by Maes’ father for a week long fishing trip. At least that’s what we tell his dad. What we really do is drink, smoke pot and stay up all night doing everything we can think of to do that we’re not supposed to do. His dad has to be ok with it because he never mentions the missing beer and come to think of it there’s always plenty here when we arrive. When we return looking worn out but wearing smiles he’ll ask us if we caught anything, we’ll lie and say it was fine eating, he’ll give us a knowing smile and life rolls on.

He never says anything more than that and when he wants his estate mowed or cars washed we don’t squabble… equivalent exchange at its finest. But enough of about Mr. Hughes it’s his son that I’m worried about right now. He hasn’t said a word to me since we arrived three hours ago but from the looks he was giving me I could tell that was about to change.

“So,” Hughes began as he pulled a beer out of his father’s stash in the fridge, “why Ed?”

I arched an eye brow at him as I motioned for him to grab me a cold one too. He slid it unopened in my direction and I sighed. Maes was always an open book when it came to his emotions. He’s been opening my beer since we were thirteen and fourteen and sneaking them out of his dad’s garage cooler. Maes was angry and hurt and there wasn’t a damn thing I could do about it.

I might as well come out with the blunt truth.

“Why don’t you ask the real question, Maes. Why not you?”

Green eyes narrowed at me for a moment before Maes snorted in a way that sounded like an equal mix of fuck life and fuck you, “You’re a real piece of work you know that, Roy? How old is he, twelve?”

“It’s not like I’m one of the ancients at seventeen, Hughes. Ed’s fifteen and the same age as Gracia,” I replied. If he’s not going to pull his punches, neither am I.

“What does she have to do with us?”

I looked at him and I could hardly believe he was asking me this. That’s like asking what the clouds have to do with rain.

“I refuse to play anymore of your games Hughes. Did you think I’d be okay with being your secret forever? Did you think me seeing you with her wouldn't hurt?”

“You knew w weren't bout forever, Roy.”

“If that’s the case then there’s no problem You've moved on and so have I.”

“Whatever, Roy,” Maes mumbled before letting out another snort and this one had a condescending feel to it, “Where is the little guy?”

“I wouldn't advise you saying that to his face and he’s with everyone else getting high in the bathroom.”

“Oh, you got yourself a little rebel there don’t you?”

“Don’t be an ass, Maes. You know as well as I do we’d both be in there getting as high as the empire state building too if w didn't ave emo shit to work out.”

“Don’t let me stop you from having fun,” Maes replied as he sat his beer down none to gently on the counter.

“Look you are the one that basically dumped me so I don’t know why my relationship with Ed is an issue.”

“It’s not,” he sneered but I’d believe the sky was falling before I believed that.

“Can’t we just be friends again? I know we can’t forget the last year but can’t we at least try to recapture the friendship we had before we let sex get in the way?”

“Sure whatever you want Roy Boy,” Maes said and the use of his much hated nickname for me made my skin crawl.

I would have said something more if Ed, Riza, Jean, Breda, Kain and Rebecca hadn't tarted filing out of the bathroom.  There was enough pot smoke filtering through the air to give even a veteran smoker a contact buzz and couldn't help but smile at all of the laughing they were doing.

Ed got along with my inner circle so well that Jean and Breda had insisted I bring him along on our camping trip even though he wasn't old enough to drive yet. Any guest on one of our trips had to be at least sixteen had always been our cardinal rule. Rules were made to be broken and I was happy they were willing to break them for Ed.

As everyone grabbed a beer I noticed Ed giving Hughes plenty of space and Hughes getting agitated about being ignored. Ed was in the middle of telling us all a story about his last trip to an amusement park and some ride he loved when Maes started laughing obnoxiously loud.

I knew that sound was the beginning of the end.

“You mean to tell me you’re actually tall enough to get on the good rides!”

The entire room froze.

Ed turned slowly so that he was facing, Hughes. Eyes the shade sun-fire leveled at Maes and he swallowed so hard we all heard it, “What did you say?”

With half the wind gone out of his sails from the silence in the room and the truly scathing look Ed was giving him. Maes cleared his throat and against everyone’s better judgment he repeated what he said.

Ed moved so fast I missed what happened but it ended with Maes flat on his back on the cabin floor. Jean was the first one to start laughing and everyone else followed suit.

Leaning over a pissed off Maes Ed said, “I know what your problem is Scruffy and I suggest you get the fuck over it.”

“Scruffy… SCRUFFY! How dare you!”

“I’ll dare that and anything else I fucking feel like daring. Now listen closely, I’m going outside with Roy and I don’t want you or your so called beard appearing for any lame ass reasons. Understood?”

Mae didn't respond but everyone present took his silence as a yes. As Ed grabbed my wrist and pulled me toward the side door I heard Breda telling Hughes that only a stupid fucker pissed off the only person in the school to letter in Taekwondo and Kendo and I have to agree. I wasn't wise move.

Once Ed got me outside he said, “He’s going to be a problem all weekend isn't he?”

“I don’t think so. I believe you may have taught him a lesson.”

“If it looks like he didn't take notes I wouldn't mind ‘instructing’ him again.”

“I’m sure yo wouldn't,” I replied with a smile. “How about we go find a quiet corner so we can partake in some lessons of our own?”

“Sounds good to me,” Ed said as he leered at me in a way that promised to be fun… a lot of fun.

The week was bound to be interesting but I was more than happy to be along for the ride.
