Ed was sick, Roy was worried, Russell was stressing and the cherry on top...
Alphonse.
Yes, sweet, kind, loving Alphonse could be a real terror in mother hen mode.
From the moment he arrived nothing and no one got within ten feet of Ed without going through Al first.
Roy was sitting on the other side of the room when Russell came in carrying Ed’s medicine and a pitcher of water.
“It’s not time for that yet,” Al said.
“I know,” Russell replied and the exasperated tone told Roy he was biting his tongue. “It’s a new bottle. I brought it in because his next dose should polish off the bottle on the nightstand.”
Al picked up the aforementioned bottle and its lightness must have proven Russell’s statement to be true because Al didn’t comment further.
“Has he woken up or said anything today?”
Al flushed and mumbled, “A little.”
“What did he say?”
“You couldn’t pay me enough to repeat that.”
Russell looked over at Roy and when he looked sheepish Russell said, “Oh... I see.”
Tense uncomfortable silence.
“Since you have everything under control here Alphonse we’ll go fix lunch,” Roy said.
Once downstairs Roy could hear Russell’s teeth grinding together. Pulling his youngest lover into a hug he said, “I know it’s damn near impossible but try not to take it personally.”
Relaxing in Roy’s embrace he said, “It’s not just that, it’s the fact he won’t let me do anything. I feel helpless enough as it is.”
“And so does, Alphonse.”
“I know,” Russell sighed.
“So how about we cook and I’ll try to entice Alphonse out of the room long enough to eat.”
“If that doesn’t work?”
“We drug him.”
Russell laughed at that and there was something a little more right with the world.
