Kain wasn’t so sure how he felt about this “new and improved, Ed” as Havoc called him. Not that he thought Ed would remain the same as the years passed but still there seemed to be something...off. Kain couldn’t quite put his finger on it but something was missing from this Ed that returned to them from the gate. Sure he liked the fact that this Ed wasn’t so driven. He loved the fact that this Ed smiled and laughed.

What he didn’t like was the fact that this Ed seemed to want nothing to do with him.

He missed the easy air that was once between them and loathed this...tension or whatever the hell it was that had taken its place. He wanted his lunch buddy back. He wanted his casual conversationalist back. Damn-it he wanted the only person he was taller than back as his friend!

As he watched Ed breeze out of the office with Havoc without so much as a glance in his direction Kain sighed and thought, new yes definitely...but not so improved.

Kain was done with Ed dodging him. If the man didn’t want anything more to do with him he was going to force him to come right out and say so. He’s wracked his brain time and again and he just couldn’t figure out what could have happened to make Ed behave as he was. With this decided Kain followed Ed into the conference room Mustang had sent him into to prepare for a meeting.

True to form, Ed was grumbling about doing work best reserved for the clerical staff when Kain entered the room.

“What gives?”

“Huh?” Ed said as he looked up at Kain then back down to what he was doing, “Nothing really, just the bastard getting a kick out of bossing me around.”

“I didn’t mean with this Ed. I meant why are you avoiding me?”

“I don’t know what you’re talking about,” Ed replied as he continued placing the stacks of papers on the table.

“Then why won’t you look at me?”

Ed paused for a moment, glanced up at Kain and went back to work.

“Fine,” was Kain's last word on the matter before he left the room. He wasn’t the type to force the issue anymore than he already had. If Ed didn’t want to come clean with him then they could leave it at that. But something was nagging at his mind telling him it wasn’t that simple and he could have sworn just before he got out of earshot he heard Ed curse.
