They had pronounced Roy dead at the scene of the accident but it had taken two hours and several tranquilizers for Ed to let him go.
The following days were dark indeed. All Al could do was watch the silent sorrowful person that barely resembled his brother move around their house like a wraith.
The day before the funeral Ed spoke for the first time since Roy died and it was to chew the military out for even considering doing any sort of gun salute. In the face of his rage and with everyone that knew Roy personally supporting him they lit candles in lieu of gunfire.
Despite their being no regulations in place for the situation the military was facing concerning Ed and Roy’s relationship, they did the honorable thing and Ed was given the folded Amestrian flag at the end of the services. Hours after the funeral was over and night had fallen Al leaned on a tree with his eyes focused on the last family member he had left and worried.
Ed hadn’t moved in hours.
Walking up to his grieving sibling Al chanced speech.
“Brother...”
No response.
“Brother … it’s time to go.”
Ed turned to Al and eyes that looked closer to a flat bronze instead of blazing amber stared right through him.
“He… he’s down there,” Ed said as he looked back at Roy’s grave. “He’s never coming home and I’ll never see him again.”
Al didn’t know what to say to that.
“I’ve saved so many people Al. So many… but I couldn’t save him. I was right there and I just…”
Days of not eating or sleeping caught up to Edward Elric and his legs gave out.
On their knees shoulder to shoulder the Elric brothers cried together.
