Now some randomness just because I feel like it....
Yes. Luckily I don't seem to remember anything like that from my childhood. I often claim that when me and my sis were small (late 80's-early 90's) that children programmes at large were of better quality than these days. They had plot and decent animation or acting. Nowadays when I happen upon a children's programme on the telly I sometimes look at it and think 'what child would want to watch that?'.
My niece is so going to be subjected to copious anime. And Disney. And classic Finnish children series like Moomin (which actually could technically be called an anime since it was animated in Japan but didn't air there (originally) but was voice acted in Finland. Most 'anime purists' around here don't consider it an anime).
Did you know, I actually saw some anime as a child when I was too little to even know what it was (anime and manga really came here in 2003). There was this show called Tao Tao about a panda cub and it's mother telling it stories. I loved it.

Sorry about that small trip down memory lane...
