Ed’s companion was well dressed, charming, humorous and a bit too damn confident for Roy’s liking. The man was telling a story that had nearly everyone enthralled to the point where no one even noticed his arrival. Once the plot twist was delivered the whole room was filled with laughter.
Once Ed regained his composure the man gave him a smile that made him flush a little even as he returned the gesture.
The man leaned down, whispered in Ed’s ear and as they headed for the kitchen, Roy makes his presence known.
“Hello, I don’t believe we've met before.”

“Gabriel Vanderbilt, the III. Ed speaks fondly of you, glad you could join us.”
That pleasantry threw Roy off balance.
“I wouldn’t miss the Hughes annual winter party for the world.”
An arm slides across Ed’s shoulders, “This is my first, but it’s the first of many I hope.”
