Well, that was one hell of a read. The subject matter was so overwhelming and hit so many nerves that I actually quit reading half way into part one, but I just couldn’t stay away. The tale is very compelling on so many levels, and from so many angles. Ed facing this horrific ordeal in the name of love for his family, Roy finally doing what he knew had to be done regardless of the personal consequences, Maria Ross’ attempts to open her principal’s eyes to get Ed the help he so desperately needed – all of it rang true. I loved how you gradually expanded the focus around Ed and Roy into subtle undercurrents illustrating how terrible tragedy affects not just the people directly involved, but the entire community. Oddly enough, as much as I despised Hohenheim for what he was putting Ed through, I honestly pitied him as well, his mind shattered under the crushing burden of his guilt. A sad, sad story, with an ending that promises some respite for Ed’s suffering at least, but no guarantee of a happily ever after. Such is life.
